With meals going for about $9 a pop, don't look forward to more of my eating-out escapade in the city like I do in Sarawak! I figure surviving on a shoestring is possible, not by Malaysian standard, but I've no idea at what cost. I had classmates who survived on baked beans and egg with rice almost every day, and that was considered extreme! This is my stab at bohemian living...I was at Woolies on my first afternoon, and was cooking that evening. It was a frugal shopping with a bulb of garlic and onion, a couple of potatoes, a small slab of beef etc., ... simply don't have the space in the fridge. I managed to cook a one-plate-meal for about $5 per meal for 2 person ie. $2.50 per person. This is a fast and simple 1 dish meal for student-on-the-go. The most one spends in the kitchen is ½ an hour, from preparation to a finished meal.
The kitchen here is less than ideal - an electric stove with oven; and the only equipment is a medium pot and a small pan. So don't expect any demonstration. Cooked meals are usually just brunch and dinner - late to bed and wake-up. The egg and bacon brunch you see here comes close to the realm of $5 budget. Bacon ($2.69), generic baked beans (75¢), dinner buns (90¢ for 4), and eggs (90¢ for 4). I didn't even finish the whole pack of bacon; I have a third left, which is good for another filler.
