WAN CHAI @ HILLS SHOPPING MALL, 1A JALAN MATHIES, KUCHING

It's one rainy night, and the best place to have dinner is where they have parking within the building, so one will not get drenched. There are a handful of eateries dotted within the parameter of this mall/hotel. The newest being the Food Inc.;it's our first stop to check out the place. The first impression doesn't look promising. Apart from a Japanese joint, the rest of the stalls seem to be selling snacks. And the lack of customers is a tell-tale sign...

Me: Food Inc.?
Chinese Waitress: No Fook Ing! ("No Photocopy" in Chinese)

So we go one floor up to Wan Chai...

This is what we have...

Perfect Match RM4.50
Soya Bean Drink RM2
Satay Gravy Chicken Chop Rice RM8
Nasi Lemak Special RM8

The Perfect Match is coffee/tea combo by any other name, and it's a watered-down version of any of the Cham I've ever had. The Satay Gravy is more peanutty than satayi, lacking in fragrance. And the Nasi Lemak is kinda lame in a way. The only saving grace of this Old Joy's Offshoot is the ambiance of the place.

Dear Kongkay,

I am a frequent reader of your blog. I trust your taste in food to be above average and would like to ask whether you have any contacts in Kuching for good Bak Chang? I know that this is totally not related to this post but I hope you can help. Thanks.

nate: crown tower, but its more of an eating place than a mall.

daomingsi: there are various types of bak chang - hokkien, foochow, nonya etc. you can try ting's noodle, or the ones at lee cafe (this one is the same as the one next to dong guan, opposite timberland) both at ban hock road. or you can call 0198280999; this is a residence behind petronas station at hui sing garden.

Dear Kongkay,

Thanks for the reply. I prefer the Nyonya ones with ketumbar.

goodness...this place is a really thumbs down. The Perfect Match was a horrendous experience. I've tried the lok-lok rice also, the deep-fried-everything on the platter were as though just taken out of the fridge, and being ladled hot piping sauce on top. Sushi King anytime @ The Hills.

sibu food diva i had to agree with you. The food there is horrible for me. I ordered black pepper chicken rice and it came out to be "soupy" black pepper chicken. :X

luckily this place is no more... to be replaced by an equally "over-the-hill" sub.

ABOUT THIS BLOG

As the name implies, it's all about nothing! Kongkaying is like grasping in the air - more like hot air with occasional fartulence. Hopefully, something aromatic will come out of it! If not...
